The Earthquake in Nepal and the Kali Practices
Dear friends and lovers of Kali, dear community,

As you may know by now, there was a very large earthquake in Nepal on April 25, 2015. There are still large aftershocks. Over 1800 lives have been lost thus far and the suffering and damage is unfathomable. For up to date news on what is happening, please visit any of the major online news sources to discover for yourself what is unfolding there. I won’t repeat them here.

That said, I can imagine that many of you think that this is far away and find it hard to connect to the immensity of what has occurred in Nepal. I thought to reach out to all of you and let you know a little more about how this is actually very very close to us; this is us.

Kathmandu and the surrounding valley are the heartland of our Kali practices, the source and the foundation. Not just the temples and the ancient Kali texts but the living people: teachers, friends, and spiritual community. These people are the original inhabitants of Nepal and because of them, these spiritual traditions and lineages have flourished, and were kept alive by the kindness, devotion, and deep sadhana of the Nepali people. They also were kind enough to transmit these practices and lineages to me, which is the basis of the Kali Practices that we do here in the west.

Fortunately, as of today, I know that my teachers and their families in Kathmandu are alive. One of my best friends and her family are safe. Another best friend, some of her family members are still missing and they are living in tents on the streets in the rain. These are the good stories. There are many other stories we could tell too.

What is challenging right now is that a few people that reported in as alive a day ago are now not able to be found. This could be because the electricity is gone and so mobile phones are out of power. It could be for other reasons, especially with the intensity of the after shocks and the ongoing dangers. The story is not over; the story has just begun.

This is a moment where the potential of our sadhana, our spiritual practice and prayer, can now take root; let your eyes open to the reality of what has happened. Really drink this in. Let this take you back to practice and benefitting others through our sadhana.

You might ask, how do prayers help such a situation, a situation that is so, well, so utterly physical and far away? As spiritual practitioners, we work with energy and in the unseen realms. We do our sadhana so that we can strip away that which separates us from our true nature, the true nature of all of this actually, the true nature of each other, which some describe as Love. When we find our way into this wisdom stream, it turns out that we can connect and communicate with the mind-streams of other beings. Perhaps in your sadhana or prayers today, you may want to let your awareness move out to touch those who died unexpectedly and are wandering in confusion in the state after death? Your mantra, prayers, and love can help ease them and reduce their confusion and suffering. Your mantra and prayers can help them move across. This is just one example of how our sadhana matters.

In my neighborhood, there are many Nepali families. I am doing my best to greet them when I see them and ask simple questions about their families back home. Many of them feel lost because they are not with their families in Nepal or isolated because so few people here in the US truly understand what they are suffering. Perhaps you can make simple gestures of love and care in your neighborhood, on Facebook, at work, and as you move in the world. Ask questions, stay informed, and offer kindness everywhere. Perhaps there are gatherings of the Nepali community that you can support? Perhaps you would like to make a financial donation to one of the worthy on-the-ground organizations that are already providing relief?

Let this be a wakeup call to how precious our lives our and that we don’t know if we will be here tomorrow. Live well, love hard, and practice like your hair is on fire. If you aren’t able to undertake spiritual practice for some reason, at least love deeply and widely.

I give great thanks to all that we have been given by these beautiful people, my Nepali teachers, family, and friends. I give great thanks to the land of Nepal for supporting these practices and teachings. I give great thanks that I met this wisdom stream in this lifetime.

I love you and hope to see each of you very soon,

All the pilgrimage-centres exist in woman’s body.

~ Purascharan‹ollasa Tantra

Because she practices the yonimudra,

attends upon the Feet of Girija (the Divine Mother),

and because of the glory of total immergence without support, she is called yogini.

. . . .

Because [she is] dear to a hundred crores of the great divine Yogini deities,

and because she grants quick liberation, she is called sakti.

. . . .

O My Beloved!

Because he throbs with the glory of the Mantra due to the practice of yoni-mudra

and because he is adorable to the host of deities, he is called yogi.

. . . .

Because he gathers [his] essence/worth/strength, because he treads the path of dharma

and because he controls the active senses, he is called sadhaka.

. . . .

In the Three Worlds there is no merit equal to the Kulapuja.

Hence, one who performs this worship with devotion obtains both

Enjoyment and Enhancement.

                                                  (excerpted from Kularn‹ava Tantra)

Thus says the

Shaktisangama Tantra (II.52)

 Woman is the foundation of the world;

The universe is her form.

Woman is the foundation of the world;

She is the true form of the body.

Whatever form she takes,

Whether the form of a man or a woman,

Is the superior form.

In woman is the form of all things,

Of all that lives and moves in the world.

There is no jewel rarer than a woman,

No condition superior to that of a woman.

There is not, nor has been, nor will be

Any destiny to equal that of a woman.

There is no kingdom, no wealth,

To be compared with a woman.

There is no prayer to equal a woman.

There is not, nor has been, nor will be

Any yoga to compare with a woman,

No mystical formula nor asceticism

To match a woman.

There are not, nor have been, nor will be

Any riches more valuable than woman.
